Carole King Named MusiCares Person of the Year

Four-time Grammy winner recognized for her career and philanthropic work

Carole King will be honored as MusiCares’ 2014 Person of the Year at the foundation’s annual gala dinner and concert on Jan. 24, MusiCares prexy Neil Portnow announced on Thursday.

The four-time Grammy winner, who penned such hits as “Up on the Roof,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” “You’ve Got a Friend” and “Natural Woman,” is being recognized for her career achievements as well as her philanthropic efforts, which have focused greatly on environmental causes like forest ecosystem protection.

The gala, which will be held two nights before the 56th Grammys, will feature performances in King’s honor by the Dixie Chicks, Lady Gaga, Bette Midler, Jazon Mraz, James Taylor and Steven Tyler, with more performer announcements to come. The evening’s proceeds, generated by ticket sales and a silent auction, will go toward MusiCares efforts to provide financial and medical support to musicians in need.

In 1971, King was the first female writer-artist to win four Grammys, for record, song and album of the year as well as best pop vocal performance for “Tapestry.” With more than 25 million units sold worldwide, that album remained the best-selling album by a female artist for a quarter century.

King has since amassed three other platinum and eight gold albums. She has been honored with a Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award and a spot in the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

This year Bruce Springsteen was the honoree while Paul McCartney was lauded in 2012.
