‘Dumb & Dumber’ Producers Sue to Protect Rights

Producers of the “Dumb and Dumber” sequel are suing to block producers from the original 1994 film from having anything to do with the upcoming pic.

On Monday, Red Granite filed court docs to keep Steve Stabler and Brad Krevoy away from Universal’s “Dumb and Dumber To.” Red Granite claims that Stabler and Krevoy want fees and credits associated with the sequel, and have threatened legal action if they don’t get both.

The film’s original stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are set to reprise their roles alongside directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly, who helmed the first pic. U took on the project after it came out of turnaround at Warner Bros.

Red Granite claims that their deal with Uni for the picture nullifies any rights Stabler and Krevoy may have had when the project was at WB. The company says in the suit, “No agreement of any kind exists between Red Granite, on the one hand, and either Krevoy or Stabler, on the other hand, in connection with ‘Dumb and Dumber To,’ nor have Krevoy or Stabler furnished any pre-production, producing or any other services to Red Granite in connection with ‘Dumb and Dumber To.'” Red Granite claims that the 1994 agreement between New Line and Stabler and Krevoy for “Dumb and Dumber” does not grant rights to “Dumb and Dumber To.”

They are seeking a declaration that Krevoy and Stabler have no rights to the new project, and that Red Granite has no obligation to them.
