Cannes: Sony Acquires Multiple Territories 'Black

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has secured Germany, Austria, German-speaking Switzerland, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia and Latin America in a multi-territory deal for Focus Features International’s “Black Sea,” which stars  Jude Law.

“Last King of Scotland” director Kevin Macdonald directed the heist thriller, which tells the story of a laid-off submarine captain so desperate to prove himself that he takes on a dangerous mission to the bottom of the Black Sea.

Backup Media invested against distribution rights in France, Benelux and French-speaking Switzerland. Other territories that sold include E-Stars in China, Top Films for CIS, eOne for Australia and New Zealand, Lev Cinema in Israel and Ster-Kinekor in South Africa.

Focus and Film4 produced and financed “Black Sea,” written by TV’s “Utopia” scribe Dennis Kelly. Focus holds the worldwide rights — excluding U.K. free TV rights, which are held by Film4.

Other FFI pics include Asif Kapadia’s untitled Amy Winehouse docu, true-life thriller “Kill the Messenger” and Mike Lee’s biopic about the painter J.M.W. Turner.
