‘Boardwalk Empire’: Helmer Pays Respect to the Corleones

Van Patten threw in "the kitchen sink" for Emmy-nommed season finale

On the “Boardwalk Empire” team, helmer Tim Van Patten bats leadoff and cleanup, since he’s handed all the opening and final episodes. Exec producer Martin Scorsese threw out the first pitch with the pilot, but Van Patten hit episode 2 out of the park and now manages four installments per year. Emmy nom No. 9, which, if he won, would net him back-to-back trophies, came for a season finale involving “a body count of 60.”

“The season promised gangsterism,” Van Patten says, “and we figured, let’s close it big. Let’s refer to Peckinpah, Arthur Penn, Sam Fuller. Let’s throw the kitchen sink in there and make it entertaining.” He also inserted a witty Coppola homage, though this time it’s aggrieved wife Kelly Macdonald implacably closing the door on Don Steve Buscemi. “We called it the ‘Reverse Godfather.’ ”
