Everett wins biography prize

Actor takes award for memoir 'Vanished Years'

LONDON

Actor Rupert Everett’s memoir “Vanished Years” has won the sixth annual Sheridan Morley Prize for theater biography.

Everett is currently appearing Oscar Wilde in the Robert Fox, Theater Royal Bath Prods., Hampstead Theater and Chichester Festival Theater revival of “The Judas Kiss,” now playing on the West End. Prize comes with a £2000 ($3030) cash prize.

“Vanished Years” includes tales of the thesp’s relationship with his father, his friendship with Natasha Richardson and a chronicle of his abbreviated time on “Celebrity Apprentice,” a Brit TV show created for Brit charity Comic Relief.

The other shortlisted authors were Arthur Laurents for “The Rest Of The Story,” Simon Callow for “Charles Dickens and The Great Theater of The World,” Michael Pennington for “Sweet William,” Sue Prideaux for “Strindberg, A Life” and Kate Bassett for “In Two Minds: A Biography Of Jonathan Miller.”

The jury said of Everett’s book, “In a very strong field, ‘Vanished Years’ was a clear winner. It’s just plain fun to read, and is a firsthand account of the everyday life of a working and highly successful actor from the inside. Surprising, hilarious and wise.”

Administered by Oberon Books, the prize was awarded in a ceremony at London’s Garrick Club Feb. 27.
