Joel McHale emcees Costume Designer Guild Awards

Emcee Joel McHale helped turn the 15th annual Costume Designer Guild Awards into something of a roast at the BevHilton.

Russell Crowe, you did a good job at playing Captain Crunch in ‘Les Mis,’ ” McHale said at Tuesday’s fete. “And now you’re going to kick my ass, so I’ll be waiting by the valet stand after the show. I’ll be dressed as Jon Hamm.”

Steve Martin presented the Distinguished Collaborator Award to SNL’s Lorne Michaels, saying, “Congratulations, Lorne. I’m so proud of you. It’s going to be a long time before I forget this night, but believe me when I tell you, I will forget it.”

Shirley MacLaine gave the Excellence in Period Film Award to Jacqueline Durran for her work on “Anna Karenina,” but took the opportunity to thank all the designers present.

“I purposely wanted to be here tonight to pay tribute to all of you people who mess with our bodies and force you to stand still for hours,” MacLaine said. “I came to balance my karma with you. I know I’ve been causing you a lot of grief for 65 fucking years.”
