The Weinstein Co. has launched development of a movie version of the musical “Pippin,” bringing on Storyline Entertainment partners Craig Zadan and Neil Meron to produce.

TWC has also tapped James Ponsoldt, director of “The Spectacular Now,” to write the screenplay.

“Pippin” centers on a young prince in the Middle Ages. It debuted in 1972 with Bob Fosse directing from the book by Roger O. Hirson, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.

The recent revival won Tony Awards this year for best revival, best direction of a musical for Diane Paulus and best actress in a musical for Patina Miller.

Zadan and Meron previously teamed with TWC on “Chicago.” They are producing the Academy Awards telecast and recently produced “The Sound Of Music” on NBC and the miniseries “Bonnie & Clyde” for A&E, Lifetime and the History Channel.
