Universal Scores Best Year Ever O’seas with $1.8 Bil

Studio bests its previous benchmark set in 2012

With two of the summer’s highest-grossing films, “Despicable Me 2” and “Fast and Furious 6,” Universal already has achieved its biggest year ever at the international box office, with $1.8 billion and counting.

The studio’s previous overseas benchmark was set last year, when it amassed a total $1.79 million internationally.

So far this year, U’s largest grosser outside the U.S. and Canada is “Fast and Furious 6,” which grossed $544.4 million, followed by “Despicable Me 2,” with $410 million, “Les Miserables” ($293 million), “Oblivion” ($197.1 million) and “Mama” ($75.9 million).

Local-language productions, including Argentina’s “Foosball,” which has grossed $11.2 million locally, have further lifted the studio’s international market share. Universal will release 14 more films this year, of which 11 are local-lingo films.
