The Weinstein Co. has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Jalil Lespert’s upcoming French-language biopic “Yves Saint Laurent.”
Wy Prods.’ Wassim Beji is producing and “Headwinds” director Lespert is helming from a screenplay he wrote with Marie-Pierre Huster.
Pierre Niney (“18 Years Old and Rising”) will star with Guillaume Gallienne set to play Saint Laurent’s romantic partner and fashion house co-founder Pierre Berge.
“Yves Saint Laurent” kicks off in January 1958 with the designer, just 21, presenting his first haute couture collection for Christian Dior to great success. He met Berge during his first show and they teamed to create the Yves Saint Laurent Company three years later.
“Yves Saint Laurent’s unmatched vision, ambition and business savvy continue to spark intrigue in the eyes of the world,” said TWC co-chairman Harvey Weinstein. “The personal and business relationship shared between him and Pierre Berge only added further depth to his story; we feel that Jalil Lespert’s film will perfectly capture these combined elements.”
TWC noted that “Yves Saint Laurent” is not connected to director Bertrand Bonello’s upcoming film on the designer, called “Saint Laurent,” starring Gaspard Ulliel and Jeremie Renier and produced by Mandarin Cinema.
