Tribeca Film Takes U.S. Rights to ‘Broken Circle Breakdown’

Belgian romance gearing up for late 2013 theatrical run prior to VOD and digital

New York-based distributor Tribeca Film has picked up U.S. rights to Felix van Groeningen’s “The Broken Circle Breakdown,” the film that had its Stateside bow at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.

Movie will have a late 2013 theatrical release prior to showing up on VOD platforms and digital outlets.

Film, a bluegrass-infused romance between a tattoo parlor owner and a banjo player, won awards at Tribeca for narrative feature (for scribe Carl Joos and co-writer/director van Groeningen) and actress Veerle Baetens, who stars alongside Johan Heldenbergh. Pic was a box office success in a late 2012 release in its native Belgium, won an audience award at the Berlin Intl. Film Festival and also has played screens in countries including the Netherlands and Germany, with a French release skedded for later this year.

Dirk Impens produced the film. Distribution deal was pacted by Tribeca Film’s Nick Savva and Alison Diviney with Brigitte Suarez for the filmmakers.

Broken Circle” joins a Tribeca Film slate that has recently included “The English Teacher” (another Tribeca fest alum), “Hansel and Gretel Get Baked” and “Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes.” Multi-platform distributor is affiliated with the Tribeca Film Festival, but isn’t limited to acquiring titles from just that fest.
