Tokyo Festival Highlights Asian Interest

Competition features Ning Ying, Joe Swanberg, Jun Robles Lana, Fukada Koji

TOKYO — The Tokyo International Film Festival today unveiled the line-up for its 26th edition, which will unspool Oct. 17-25 in Tokyo’s Roppongi Hills entertainment and shopping complex.

The previously announced opening film will be Paul Greengrass’s thriller “Captain Phillips,” with star Tom Hanks scheduled to attend. The closing film will be the Koki Mitani period comedy “The Kiyosu Conference” (pictured).

The 15-pic competition section is heavy on films from the Asian region, including two from host country Japan. Among the highlights are “To Live and Die in Ordos,” a true-life drama by Ning Ying, the Chinese helmer whose 1993 drama “For Fun” was a TIFF prize winner, “Red Family,” a drama produced by controversial Korean auteur Kim Ki-duk, and “Drinking Buddies,” a romcom by US helmer Joe Swanberg. “Barber’s Tales,” the latest effort by acclaimed “Bwakaw” director Jun Robles Lana from The Philippines, also gets a competition berth.

The in-competition Japanese pair are “Au Revoir l’Ete” by Fukada Koji and “Disregarded People,” by Sakaki Hideo.

The competition jury is headed by Chinese director Chen Kaige, assisted by Korean actress Moon So-ri, Australian producer Chris Brown, U.K. director and scripter Chris Weitz and Japanese actress Shinobu Terajima.

The Special Screenings section for pictures scheduled for fall and winter release includes the Steven Soderbergh Liberace biopic “Behind the Candelabra,” Ben Lewin’s disability drama “The Sessions,” Peter Landesman’s JFK assassination drama “Parkland” and Sophia Coppola’s “The Bling Ring,” with Coppola scheduled to attend. Also screening will be the multiple Cannes winner “Adele: Chapters 1&2.”

Among other sections are ‘Asian Future’ for first and second pics by Asian directors, with a special program of new films from Taiwan, ‘World Focus’ for world fest favorites that have not yet found Japanese distributors and ‘Japanese Cinema Splash’ for indie pics by Japanese directors.

The TIFFCOM TV and film rights market will be held Oct. 22-24, together will music and cartoon marts, in the Odaiba section of Tokyo Bay. A total of 229 exhibitors will be selling to 983 registered buyers.
