French giant continues to forge pan-European alliances

Paris-based Studiocanal is in negotiations to acquire Red Prods., a leading U.K. producer of scripted and factual programs.

The acquisition of Red Prods. would mark another significant step in Studiocanal’s strategy to forge alliances with top local producers in major territories, allowing it to ramp up its presence across Europe’s TV landscape.

Red’s credits range from Channel 4′s “Queer as Folk”  to ITV’s three-part thriller drama “Unforgiven” helmed by Sally Wainwright, and Sky Atlantic’s daring drama “Hit & Miss” toplining Chloe Sevigny as a transgender killer.

Red also produced Wainwright’s “Last Tango in Halifax,” pictured above, which was a ratings hit on BBC One and won two BAFTA for best drama and best writer.  Shingle ventured into feature films in 2012 with Bill Gallagher’s “Conviction,” a bigscreen makeover of their TV show.

Studiocanal, one of Gaul’s top five majors (along with Gaumont, Pathe, SND and TF1), nabbed a majority stake in Germany’s Tandem Communications, the producer of “Pillars of the Earth,” in Jan. 2012.

Both Studiocanal and Red Prods. declined to comment.

The negotiations were first reported in TBI.
