Solar Pictures Teams with Tom Hardy on “Samarkand”

Greg Williams is set to direct as his debut feature

Solar Pictures is teaming with Tom Hardy to develop drama “Samarkand.”

Hardy will portray a soldier returning from the Middle East in a story about the problems of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Script has been written by brothers Greg and Olly Williams. The project has been developed by Hardy, Bobby Paunescu of Solar Pictures and the Williams brothers.

Greg Williams is set to direct “Samarkand” as his debut feature. His short film “Sergeant Slaughter – My Big Brother,” starring Hardy, won directing awards at the New York, Chicago and San Francisco Short Film Festivals.

Solar Pictures launched last April with the goal of producing four to five movies a year with budgets up to $40 million. Los Angeles-based Solar announced in October that it had closed deals to finance and produce several movies including “Jet Black” and “The Girl Who Knew Too Much,” which will shoot this year.

Solar Pictures is a subsidiary of Solar Entertainment Group, which has also launched finance arm Solar Media Capital and investment banking and advisory services through Solar Entertainment HLB.

Romanian billionaire Paunescu and former Comerica exec Jared Underwood are Solar’s principal investors and managing directors; it’s also backed by the New York-based Shu family and Edward Lawson Johnston, founder of London-based merchant bank LJ Group.
