Sean Astin, Chris Mulkey to Star in ‘The Surface’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Indie thriller to shoot in Milwaukee

Sean Astin (“The Lord of the Rings”) and Chris Mulkey will star in indie thriller “The Surface” with Gil Cates, Jr. directing.

Good Note Productions is financing. “The Surface” is scheduled to start lensing in Milwaukee next week.

Script, written by Jeff Gendelman, centers on two strangers — each at the end of their rope — who suddenly meet in the middle of the unpredictable waters of Lake Michigan following a small plane crash.

Mulkey was recently seen in “The Purge” and co-stars in the upcoming Tom Hanks drama “Captain Phillips.”  Cates is a co-producer on the upcoming Steve Jobs biopic “Jobs” and directed 2011’s “Lucky,” starring Colin Hanks.

Before turning to screenwriting, Gendelman guest-starred on “Law and Order” and “Beverly Hills, 90210.”

Astin is represented by Innovative Artists and Matt Luber at Luber/Roklin. Mulkey is with Don Buchwald & Associates and Art/Work Entertainment. Cates is repped by Luber and Brad Small of Bloom, Hergott, Diemer, Rosenthal. Gendelman is repped by Dan Kattman at Reinhart, Boerner, Van Deuren.
