Nate Silver, Bill Simmons Aboard as SXSW Adds Sports to Menu

Sports-related screenings to accompany sessions

SXSW is adding a sports component, SXsports, to its 2014 slate, with a featured conversation between Bill Simmons and Nate Silver among the sessions.

Taking place March 7-9 in Austin, SXsports will be open to all interactive and film registrants and will incorporate film screenings with panels.

Silver, the FiveThirtyEight.com founder who joined Grantland founder/editor-in-chief Simmons under the ESPN umbrella in July, will discuss “Media and the Personal Brand” in their spotlight panel. Other noteworthy sessions include Mandalay Sports Media chairman Peter Guber on creating enterprise value in sports media.

“The world of sports truly hits the sweet spot of SXSW, the vital intersection of entertainment and technology, and we intend to approach it with the same forward-thinking and culturally relevant perspective we shine on all of our events,” SXSW head of film media relations and programmer Rebecca Feferman said. “We can’t wait to connect the sports world with our passionate audience of early adopters, culture nuts, digital creatives, and so much more.”

Additional programming is scheduled to be announced in November, with related film screenings revealed with the official SXSW film program in February. Submissions are being taken for the latter at the SXSW website.
