John Powers Middleton and Roy Lee have invested in Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane’s Good Universe after collaborating with the financing-sales-distribution outfit on “Oldboy” and “Poltergeist.”

The investment, made in the form of an undisclosed amount of structured debt, is aimed at creating a strategic alliance to generate movies via Middleton and Lee’s existing deal at Warner Bros. The deal also provides a potential investment platform for Middleton and Lee to put additional capital to work at Good Universe.

Good Universe, which launched just before Cannes, made its first deals during that market, locking multiterritory agreements with Universal Pictures Intl. for “Oldboy” and “Last Vegas.”

Lee is a producer and Middleton is an exec producer on Good Universe’s suspense thriller “Oldboy,” directed by Spike Lee and starring Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley. Pic recently wrapped production and will be released domestically by FilmDistrict on Oct. 11.

Good Universe made the announcement as the biz preps for the Feb. 7 start of the Berlin Fest.
