Michael Sheen, Juno Temple Join ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’

Shooting starting in the U.K. this week

Michael Sheen and Juno Temple have joined Carey Mulligan, Mattias Schoenarts and Tom Sturridge in Fox Searchlight’s “Far From the Madding Crowd.”

Thomas Vinterberg began shooting Monday from David Nicholls adaptation of the Thomas Hardy novel. Allon Reich and Andrew Macdonald of DNA Films are producing with Christine Langan of BBC Films executive producing. The film will shoot in Dorset, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and London.

Casting of Mulligan and Schoenarts was announced during Cannes.

“Far from the Madding Crowd,” published in 1874, centers on Bathsheba Everdene (played by Mulligan), and her suitors: Gabriel Oak (Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer; Frank Troy (Sturridge), a sergeant; and William Boldwood (Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. Temple will portray the role of Fanny, a maidservant.

Julie Christie, Peter Finch, Alan Bates and Terence Stamp starred in a 1967 adaptation directed by John Schlessinger.
