John and Drew Dowdle will co-write the pic with John directing and Drew producing. The two had previously worked on “Devil” for Fox.
No plot details were given but sources say it would follow two archaeologists in search of a lost treasure in the catacombs below Paris.
Patrick Aiello is also producing with Legendary Pictures. Alex Hedlund will oversee for Legendary.
It’s not surprising Legendary would want to get in on the micro-budget trend, though the shingle has made a name for itself with big budget pics like “The Dark Knight Rises” and this years “Man of Steel” and “Pacific Rim.” Sources say the film would be set in the $5-10 million range — stretching the boundaries of what constitutes a micro-budget picture, a term popularized for films in the under-$1 million budget range.
The $35 million budgeted sports pic “42,” which has grossed $54 million in two weeks, was considered one of Legendary’s smaller pics.
The Dowdles are repped by CAA and Weintraub Tobin Chediak Coleman Grodin Law Corporation.
