Jose Padilha To Direct ‘The Brotherhoods’ For Warner Bros.

Story centers on NYPD officers who murdered for the Mafia

Warner Bros. is in talks with “RoboCop” director Jose Padilha to direct police thriller “The Brotherhoods: The True Story of Two Cops Who Murdered for the Mafia.”

The Brazilian native is in post-production on MGM’s reboot of “RoboCop,” starring Joel Kinnaman and set for a Feb. 7 release from Sony.

Variety reported in May 2012 that the studio had acquired the feature rights to “The Brotherhoods,” penned by William  Oldham and Guy Lawson, and set the project with Warner-based producer Dan Lin. Studio tapped Bill Dubuque to adapt the book based on the investigation of former New York City cops.

After a turncoat underworld boss fingered officers Stephen Caracappa and Louis Eppolito as mob employees,  Oldham (a cop who worked alongside Caracappa) became a special investigator for the U.S. Attorney’s Brooklyn office after the NYPD decided not to investigate. The office eventually found enough evidence to arrest the pair. In 2006, they were convicted of labor racketeering, extortion, narcotics, illegal gambling, obstruction of justice, eight counts of murder and conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced to life in federal prison.

Warner Bros. has been developing the project as a cop action thriller in the vein of “The Departed,” which Lin oversaw as a studio exec.

Padilha’s credits include the documentary “Bus 174,” ” Tropa de Elite” (“Elite Squad”), which won a Golden Bear award at the 2008 Berlin International Film Festival, and “Trope de Elite 2.” His film “Secrets of the Tribe” premiered at Sundance in 2011.

Padilha is repped by CAA.
