HollyShorts Fest Jumpstarts With ‘Sidekick’

Michael Cera, Will Forte film 'The Immigrant' to unspool

Short films starring Lizzy Caplan, Ron Livingston, Michael Cera and Will Forte will unspool the ninth annual HollyShorts Film Festival at the TCL Chinese Theater, organizers announced Friday.

The sprocket opera  will take place from Aug. 15-22, showcasing some 350 shorts from 26 countries in competition.

The Aug. 15 opener will feature former “King of Queens” exec producer Michael J. Weithorn’s superhero pic “The Sidekick,” which stars Caplan, Livingston and Rob Benedict. Pic centers on a sidekick who has to find his place among mere mortals when his superhero partner kicks him to the curb.

Helmer Josh Levy will also screen “The Immigrant,” a comedy starring Cera and Forte, along with Scott Thompson, Dave Foley, Deborah Theaker, Deadlee and Margaret Cho. “The Immigrant” tells the story of a washed-up comedian who, after being deported back to his native Canada, tries to be smuggled across the Mexico-U.S. border to make his comeback.

Both shorts will screen after a presentation of David Rodriguez’s feature pic “Last I Heard.”

Other filmmakers with pics slated to screen include Chadwick Boseman (“42”) and Phil Joanou (“Gridiron Gang”).
