FilmDistrict launching High Top Releasing for Indies

'Church Girl,' 'Ultimate Life' set as first releases

Moving into the indie sphere, FilmDistrict has launched High Top Releasing to provide theatrical booking services to independent producers.

The label, a subsidiary under FilmDistrict, will provide “distribution-for-hire services.” Those include sales, in-theater marketing, rental negotiation and collections for producers who can provide their own prints-and-advertising and marketing.

High Top releases will not be counted as part of FilmDistrict’s box office revenue share.

First High Top titles will be “I’m in Love With a Church Girl” (pictured) and “The Ultimate Life.”

“Girl,” to be released in association with Mission Pictures Releasing, stars Ja Rule, alongside Adrienne Bailon and Michael Madsen. “Life,” the sequel to “The Ultimate Gift,” stars Peter Fonda, Logan Bartholomew, Bill Cobbs, Lee Meriwether and Ali Hillis.

“The FilmDistrict business plan, which calls for the release of six to nine films a year, leaves us capable of providing additional theatrical distribution services,” said Peter Schlessel, FilmDistrict’s CEO. “We are proud to be able to support independent producers and assist these movies in their theatrical release.”

    Film Review: ‘Above the Shadows’

Grief-fueled romantic fantasies can be tricky for filmmakers not named Wim Wenders. Everyone aspires to make “Wings of Desire” with its stirring immediacy, beautiful imagery and pressing poignancy, but most wind up delivering something closer to its decent but dreary American remake, “City of Angels” — which could also be said for writer-director Cynthia Myers’ [...]
