Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West Board Matthew Warchus Dramedy

'Pride' based on true story

British theater director Matthew Warchus (“God of Carnage”) is set to direct “Pride,” an ensemble period dramedy toplined by Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West.

Based on a true story, script was penned by Stephen Beresford, whose debut stage play, “The Last of the Haussmans,” which was National Theatre hit in 2012.

Set over the summer of 1984 during the Margaret Thatcher era, pic follows a group of gay and lesbian activists who decide to raise money to support the families of National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) members who are on strike. While the Union seems embarrassed to receive their support, the activists are not deterred. They decide to identify a mining village in deepest Wales and set off in a mini bus to make their donation in person. The two communities end up forming a surprising and triumphant partnership.

“(The script) made me laugh out loud,” said Warchus.

The film is produced by David Livingstone for Calamity Films and executive produced by Pathe’s Cameron McCracken and BBC Films’ Christine Langan. Natascha Wharton is lead executive for the BFI Film Fund.

Pic was developed by Pathe and Calamity Films. Pathe which is co-financing with Proud Films, BBC Films and the British Film Institute, will distribute the film in the U.K. and France and will handle international sales.

Lensing will start on Oct. 7 for eight weeks and take place in London and in Wales.
