Average Movie Ticket Price Is Highest Ever

Movie tickets in the second quarter of 2013 hit the highest price ever, at $8.38 per ticket, according to the National Association of Theater Owners. The average ticket was priced 3.2% higher than in the same quarter last year.

Though interest in 3D films has declined over the past year in North America, filmgoers choosing higher-priced premium tickets including Imax and other large formats for popular tentpoles pushed the average up. “Iron Man 3” and “Man of Steel” were among the seven films that made more than $100 million at the domestic box office in the second quarter of the year, as opposed to just three in the same period last year.

With an average of $7.94 in the first quarter, the combined average ticket price for the first half of the year was $8.16.

The average ticket price is calculated by combining normal-priced, 3D and large format tickets, with more of the premium-priced tickets sold in the pre-summer and summer tentpole season.
