Aubrey Plaza, Rachel Bilson Talk Skorts and Sex at ‘To Do List’ Premiere

CBS Films' comedy opens in Westwood

Whether you were attending the July 23 Westwood premiere of “The To Do List” as an actor, a director or just a fan of the filthy, one thing was true for all: it was a night to leave the kiddies at home.

The To Do List” stars Aubrey Plaza as an overachieving, buttoned-up valedictorian with a penchant for lists and labels, but don’t be fooled – this pic is rated R for raunch.

“I knew I was at the right studio when I put ‘Me So Horny’ by 2 Live Crew in the title sequence,” writer-director Maggie Carey said at the Regency Bruin Theater while thanking CBS Films. “I sent it to (co-president Terry Press) and she immediately wrote back, ‘Yes, and can we license it for marketing?’”

Set in the ’90s, the soundtrack isn’t the only thing that makes a welcome comeback. One audience favorite: the return of the skort.

“I think I’m wearing things that came straight out of the ‘Beverly Hills 90210’ closet,” co-star Rachel Bilson said.

Producer Jennifer Todd said what sets this film apart from other femme-centric pics is just how far it goes.

“What ‘Easy A’ did well is that (Emma Stone) talked about that stuff without actually doing it,” she said. “In this movie, Aubrey really does it. And I think people will be surprised to see that we really went for it.”

Carey wrote the pic with Plaza in mind for the role. “I always said that she was playing the Aubrey Plaza version of Tracy Flick from ‘Election,’” Carey said.

The role marks a distinct departure from Plaza’s usual deadpan fare. “I don’t think I’m the go-to person to play a type-A sincere overachiever,” she said, “but Maggie had faith in me and let me go for it. I felt really honored to tackle that role.”

Carey was quick to clarify that her first feature is fictitious, but it’s rooted in very personal realities.

“It’s a very personal story that you’re about to see on the screen,” she said while introducing the preem, “inspired by the very first hand job I gave. So enjoy!”

Amid reminiscing about first times and pre-Internet sex research (as Carey put it, “It was awkward asking the librarian what 69 meant!”), guest Taran Killam had a special announcement: “To all the kids reading Variety and looking for sex tips: you’ve got to be safe, kids!”
