Well Go U.S.A. nabs Johnnie To’s ‘Drug War’

Pic acquired by Metropolitan in France, Discovery in former Yugoslavia

LONDON — Asian film specialist Well Go U.S.A. has taken North American rights to Johnnie To’s “Drug War” at the EFM in Berlin.

Sales company Media Asia Group confirmed strong interest for the crime film at the EFM with deals closed with Well Go, Metropolitan in France and Discovery for the former Yugoslavia.

The company has also received offers representing 11 further territories, including Germany, Italy, Russia, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, that it expects to close soon.

To’s first film to lense in mainland China, “Drug War” follows the boss of drug cartel, arrested during a raid, who is persuaded by a police captain to betray his former accomplices as part of an undercover operation. The film saw its world preem at the Rome Film Festival in November. It stars Louis Koo and Sun Honglei.
