SXSW: ‘Short Term 12,’ ‘The Short Game’ Win Audience Awards

'Zero Charisma,' 'Cheap Thrills' also take aud prizes

Austin — SXSW Film auds have chosen Destin Daniel Cretton’s dramedy “Short Term 12” as their fave pic in the 2013 Narrative Feature Competition program, the festival announced Saturday, along with aud awards in eight other film program categories.

Cretton’s sophomore feature also won the SXSW grand jury award for best narrative feature earlier this week. Pic is based on his 2009 Sundance-winning short film and stars Brie Larson as young worker at a temporary shelter for adolescents, whose friendship with a new resident re-opens old wounds from her own past.

The film, which also received a warm critical response at SXSW, is repped by Cinetic and Traction.

Other SXSW aud award winners include: Josh Greenbaum’s charmer about child prodigy golfers “The Short Game” (Documentary Feature competish), Al Reinert’s “An Unreal Dream: The Michael Morton Story” (Documentary Spotlight), Katie Graham & Andrew Matthews’ “Zero Charisma” (Narrative Spotlight), Jillian Schlesinger’s “Maidentrip” (Visions), E.L. Katz’s “Cheap Thrills” (Midnighters), picked up by Drafthouse Films following its world premiere, Mark Christopher Covino & Jeff Howlett’s “A Band Called Death” (24 beats Per Second), Jukka Karkkainen & J-P Passi’s “The Punk Syndrome” (SXGlobal), Lucy Walker’s Sundance buzzer “The Crash Reel (Festival Favorites).
