Bosnian director Danis Tanovic’s Berlinale competition feature “An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker” has been picked up for Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria and the former Yugoslavia by Balkans regional film festival distribution label Operation Kino.

Operation Kino was founded by four Balkans fests — Sarajevo, Sofia, Istanbul and Romania’s Transylvania, with the backing of the European Comission’s cultural support program Media Mundus.

Operation Kino will release the film in the territories covered by the fests and more acquisitions are in the pipeline, Azize Tan of Istanbul and Tudor Giurgiu of Transylvania fests said.

The Sarajevo fest’s Jovan Marjanovic said, “Festivals as distributors as a business model has proved attractive to rights-holders, especially in developing markets such as ours, since it guarantees a blend of festival publicity and classic P&A spending for their films, giving them sufficient visibility to achieve attractiveness in the ever saturating market for films.”
