Lelio’s ‘Gloria’ feels EFM love

Dramedy sells wide, Roadside picks up N. American rights

Funny Balloons has clinched a slew of territories on Berlin competition favorite “Gloria.” Roadside Attractions announced late Monday it had acquired U.S. rights to Chilean Sebastian Lelio’s dramedy, turning on a 58-year-old divorcee’s search for love.

Star Paulina Garcia is now a firm candidate for Berlin’s best actress award.

From Sunday, when “Gloria” world preemed at the fest, Funny Balloons has also closed the U.K. (Network Releasing), German-speaking Europe (Alamode Film), Switzerland (Filmcoopi Zurich), Greece and Cyprus (Strada Film), ex-Yugoslavia (Discovery Film and Video Distribution), and Chile (BF Distribution).

France (Ad Vitam), Benelux (Wild Bunch Benelux), Spain (Vertigo), Brazil (Imovision), Colombia/Ecuador (Babilla Cine) and Latin America pay TV rights (LAP TV) were sold before Berlin.

Funny Balloons Peter Danner told Variety Tuesday that he is fielding offers from 25 more countries and will license most of them at Berlin, making “Gloria” one of the biggest arthouse hits at the fest.

First discovered in rough cut at San Sebastian’s Films in Progress in September, “Gloria” received glowing reviews at Berlin.

Pic is produced by Juan de Dios and Pablo Larrain’s Chile-based Fabula, one of three Latin American companies set to receive film-by-film investment from Participant Media’s new Participant PanAmerica film fund.
