Sofia Coppola’s “The Bling Ring” will open Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival in May, laying to rest rumors that it would compete in official competition.

The festival tweeted the announcement Wednesday ahead of Thursday’s announcement of the official selection.

Coppola’s “Marie Antoinette” played in the official selection in 2006, where it was received with both boos and a standing ovation.

While Un Certain Regard is part of the official festival, the films in that selection do not compete for the Palme d’Or.

“The Bling Ring” stars Emma Watson, Leslie Mann and Taissa Farmiga and is based on the true story of Los Angeles teenagers who broke into celebrities’ houses to steal clothes and jewelry.

It opens June 12 in France and June 14 in limited release in the U.S. through A24.

Cannes also announced Wednesday that Danish helmer Thomas Vinterberg would head Un Certain Regard’s jury.
