‘Mortal Instruments’ Sequel to Be Offered to Buyers at Cannes

Harald Zwart returns to helm sequel

LONDON — Mister Smith Entertainment is to introduce “The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes,” the sequel to the upcoming “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,” to buyers at Cannes next week.

“City of Bones,” the first pic in the fantasy franchise, is due for release worldwide this summer. Screen Gems will release it in the U.S. on Aug. 23.

Helmer Harald Zwart  and stars Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower will return for the sequel, which is being penned by Jessica Postigo Paquette, who wrote the screenplay for “Bones.” Production begins in the fall.

Robert Kulzer is producing for Constantin Film, alongside Don Carmody. Their credits include the “Resident Evil” franchise. Exec producers are Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne — who teamed on “The Lord of the Rings” — for Unique Features, and Martin Moszkowicz for Constantin.

The films are based on Cassandra Clare’s bestselling book series, which has been translated into 34 languages, and has sold more than 16 million copies worldwide. This gives the film franchise a ready-made fan-base.

The Cannes slate for Mister Smith,  led by CEO David Garrett, includes Inimitable Pictures’ “Imagine,” Dan Fogelman’s directorial debut starring Al Pacino, which starts filming this summer; and “3,096 Days,” based on the autobiography of Natascha Kampusch, the Austrian girl who was held captive for more than eight years. The film is due for release this year.
