‘Kon-Tiki’ Sails Into Berlin

Norwegian hit preems at Kino International

Norwegian hit “Kon-Tiki,” released by TWC in the States, set sail in Germany with a splashy premiere on March 6 at Berlin’s Kino International.

The Oscar-nominated true story follows the voyage of adventurer Thor Heyerdahl and his crew, who sailed across the Pacific on a balsa wood raft in 1947 to prove that seafarers from South America had settled the Polynesian islands.

DCM Productions’ Dario Suter recalled, “We are just getting started as producers and the one thing every film production manual says is to avoid shooting on water and working with animals. This script had plenty of both but we couldn’t say no.”

Producer Jeremy Thomas added, “I’ve been working on this project for 16 years. For 10 years I was on the wrong path, I had the wrong map, but I eventually found the right direction.”

Thomas credited friend Michael Douglas for putting him in touch with the late publisher Johan Stenersen, who had the rights to Heyerdahl’s story. “I promised Thor Heyerdahl before he died that we would make the film and we’ve done it,” said the producer.
