Jalil Lespert’s ‘Yves Saint Laurent’ biopic Lures More Buyers (EXCLUSIVE)

The Weinstein Co. will release the pic in the U.S.

MARRAKECH, Morocco– Jalil Lespert’s “Yves Saint Laurent,” a biopic of the famed French designer, is set to travel worldwide.

Paris-based sales outfit SND, the commercial arm of French net M6, has closed a string of pre-sales for outstanding key territories after unveiling a promo at the AFM.

SND sold the pic to Germany’s Square One and Italy’s Lucky Red, two important arthouse distributors in major European territories where sales agents now have to battle to make sales happen on foreign-language auteur fare. Other deals were inked with Taiwan (Catchplay), Latin America (Swen) and Belgium (Eone Benelux).

Produced by Wassim Beji and Yannick Bollore at WY Prods, “Yves Saint Laurent” previously sold to The Weinstein Co. for the U.S., Entertainment One (U.K., Canada and Australia), AB Svensk (Scandinavia), Top Film Distribution (Russia and CIS), Italia Films (Middle East), Pathe (Switzerland), Czech Republic (AQS), Mediamax (Turkey) and ITI Cinema (Poland).

SND will release the film on Jan. 8 2014, ahead of Bertrand Bonello’s “Saint Laurent,” another biopic of the French designer.

Pic toplines up-and-comer Pierre Niney (“It Boy”) in the title role and  Guillaume Gallienne (“Me Myself and Mum) as Pierre Berge, his lover and collaborator. Rising thesp Charlotte Le Bon also star.

Lensing just wrapped in Marrakech, where the film festival is currently taking place. Niney was on hand on the fest’s opening night.

In “Shazam!,” Zachary Levi brings off something so winning it’s irresistible. He plays a square-jawed, rippling-muscled man of might, with a cheesy Day-Glo lighting bolt affixed to his chest, who projects an insanely wholesome and old-fashioned idea of what a superhero can be. But he’s also playing a breathless teenage kid on the inside, and [...]
