Glen Basner’s FilmNation Entertainment has sold out the vast part of the world on Jonathan Glazer’s “Under the Skin,” starring Scarlett Johansson, one of the highest-profile films at this year’s Venice festival.
“We’ve pre-sold 85% of international on the basis of Jonathan Glazer, Scarlett Johansson and the originality of the material,” Basner told Variety.
In major territory deals, BIM Distribuzione has closed Italy, Studiocanal nabbed the U.K., Senator took Germany, A-Film bought Benelux, Roadshow Films took Australia/New Zealand and Sun Distribution Group grabbed Latin America.
Elsewhere, Top Film Distribution has CIS, Eastern European Acquisition Pool grabbed Eastern Europe, HGC took China and Fine Films nabbed Japan.
The distributors are, for the most part, companies which handle both speciality and commercial films, Basner said. And their high profiles and market expertise will be tested as “Under the Skin” is a film that seems difficult to buttonhole.
Johansson told Variety, “ ‘Under the Skin’ is actually not a science-fiction movie, it’s sort of a movie that asks existential questions and much more complex than the logline.”
Basner agreed. “What FilmNation does, or aspires to do, is to work with filmmakers that, in addition to their talent, offer up a unique perspective. This (film) absolutely fits that goal for us. I don’t think Jonathan (Glazer) makes movies that fit loglines perfectly. His films have so much depth and texture.”
Basner stressed the importance of financial partners that want to make special films. “In this case, Silver Reel, FilmFour, BFI and Creative Scotland were amazing partners.”
Further territories sold on “Skin” are Greece/Cyprus (Odeon), Iceland (Sam Film), Israel (Lev Cinemas), Middle East (Italia Films Intl.), Portugal (Zon Audiovisuais), Switzerland (Elite Films) and Turkey (R Film).
Panorama has bought Hong Kong, PY Amero has taken Indonesia, Multivision nabbed Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore, M Pictures bought Thailand and Ster Kinekor grabbed South Africa.
