Fox Star Boards Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Bombay Velvet’

Indian helmer's next pic is part of trilogy on Mumbai

Fox Star Studios has boarded Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap’s “Bombay Velvet,” part of a planned trilogy on Mumbai, India.

Pic stars Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma as lovers whose lives are set against the growth of Bombay, the old name for Mumbai, into a major metropolis from the 1950s to the early ’70s. It will go into production in July for a planned Dec. 25, 2014, release.

Kashyap is in Cannes with “Ugly,” which preemed in Directors’ Fortnight, and “Bombay Talkies,” an omnibus film that unspooled out of competition.

He said Mumbai’s evolution has long fascinated him, adding he has been  developing the pic for about four years.  “Bombay Velvet” is being produced by Phantom Films.

Phantoms’ Vikas Bahl said,  “We are looking forward to working with Fox Star to create a phenomenal cinematic experience.”

Fox Star Studios CEO Vijay Singh called Kashyap “one of the best storytellers” of the day, adding  “Anurag will bring alive Bombay in its original glory. For us at Fox Star, ‘Bombay Velvet’ is yet another example of high-concept cinema that we want to be known for.”
