Films Boutique Inks Multiple Deals on Wajda’s ‘Walesa’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Buyers show solidarity with Lech Walesa biopic at Venice

LONDON — World sales company Films Boutique has inked multiple territory deals and is fielding offers for several other countries for Andrzej Wajda’s “Walesa, Man of Hope,” which premieres in Venice out of competition this week, before screening at the Toronto Film Festival.

Reaction from buyers has been very positive after the first market screenings of the pic, which depicts 20 years in the life of Lech Walesa, the leader of the Polish trade union Solidarity and Poland’s first post-Communist president.

The film has been sold to A Contracorriente Films in Spain, New Select in Japan, and Cirko in Hungary, and Films Boutique has offers on the table for Sweden, Norway, Italy, Switzerland and France.

Films Boutique’s CEO Jean-Christophe Simon says he expects to close most territories in Toronto.

Wajda will receive the Persol prize at Venice, which celebrates a “legend of international cinema.” The ceremony will be held on Sept. 5 in the Sala Grande of the Palazzo del Cinema, and will be followed by the official festival screening of “Walesa, Man of Hope.”

The pic was produced by Michal Kwiecinski for Akson Studio in Poland.
