Doha Film Institute Launches Kids’ Pix Fest

Ajyal Film Fest will run Nov. 26-30

ROME — The Doha Film Institute is forging ahead with its new Ajyal Film Festival for the Young, which will run Nov. 26-30 with hundreds of kids from the region as jurors.

Five-day kiddie shindig, being touted by topper Fatma Al Remaihi as the first kiddie fest of its type in the Gulf, will comprise competitive sections for narrative features and shorts from around the planet, and also Made in Qatar/Student sections.

Competition winners will receive development coin through the Ajyal Film Fund.

The event, modelled on Italy’s Giffoni Film Festival for children, will also include masterclasses, panels, family-friendly special screenings, thematic retrospectives and tributes.

The “several hundred” jurors will be in three age categories: 8-12, 13-17 and 18-21.

Submissions close Aug 25. There is no entry fee.

Ajyal is one of two new fests being launched by the DFI after it recently scrapped the Doha-Tribeca fest.

The other new DFI event, announced at Cannes, is the eight-day Qumra Film Festival for first-and-second time helmers, which will take place in March 2014.

They are both part of the DFI’s new vision for fostering filmmaking in the Gulf.
