‘Sholay’ 3D Preps for January Release

Bollywood stars Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan to promote Indian film

Hindi blockbuster “Sholay” is prepping a bigscreen comeback in a 3D format next year.

With leads Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan agreeing to promote it, the 1975 classic will be reissued in January, according to Sholay Media and Entertainment. Since 2011 Maya Digital has been working on the 3D conversion. But only some scenes were converted, using “Titanic” and “Jurassic Park” as examples, not the entire 162-minute film.

In it;s initial release, pic earned a whopping $25 million, according to Box Office India and played in one Mumbai theater for five years.

The story of a landowner who takes revenge on the bandits who robbed him with the help of two former convicts has elements from “The Magnificent Seven” and “Seven Samurai,” with an all-star cast of not only Dharmendra and Bachchan, but also their respective current spouses Hema Malini and Jaya Bhaduri, and the late Sanjeev Kumar and Amjad Khan.

Helmer Ramesh Sippy,  who signed over his rights before “Sholay’s” release for tax reasons, has been fighting to regain them since. However, a court rejected his plea for a stay on the 3D version’s release until his rights battle was settled.

“Everything has been done tastefully, and nothing has been added that wasn’t already there,” Shehzad Sippy, a nephew who was involved with the project, told the Hindustan Times.
