“12 Years a Slave” topped the Alliance of Women Film Journalists awards with six nods, including best film.
The org called out “Last Vegas” for the tongue-in-cheek biggest age gap award and poked fun at “The Counselor.” “Her” won for the best depiction of sexuality — even though it involved a romance with an operating system instead of a human.
The awards put a special focus on women in filmmaking, but fete men as well.
Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto were awarded with, respectively, actor and supporting actor for their parts in “Dallas Buyers Club.” Cate Blanchett was recognized as best actress for “Blue Jasmine.” Lupita Nyong’o won supporting actress and breakthrough actress for her role in “12 Years a Slave.”
Sandra Bullock won two unconventional awards in the female focus section, both for “Gravity.” She takes home the Kick Ass Award for female action star, as well as an honor for an actress defying age and ageism.
As for the special mentions, Michael Douglas was called out for the second time (he won in 2010 for “Solitary Man”) for the most egregious age gap between a leading man and love interest for “Last Vegas.” “The Counselor” was honored — kind of — for being the film that “you most wanted to love, but just couldn’t,” and Cameron Diaz won the award for actress most in need for a new agent for her role in the film.
The EDA Awards is named after Eda Reiss Merin, the mother of the founder of AWFJ. AWFJ is a non-profit consisting of women film journalists in the U.S., Canada and the UK. The full list is below.
