Sony Pictures Classics has confirmed that “Foxcatcher,” directed by Bennett Miller, will be released next year, bowing out of the awards race.
A statement said “SPC supports the decision of the filmmakers to allow for more time to finish the film.”
Earlier this week, the Weinstein Co. delayed the 2013 bow of “Grace of Monaco,” the Nicole Kidman starrer, until next year. With an overflow of possible awards contenders this year, it’s possible other films may move from their late-year berths into next year. There is always last-minute shuffling of schedules. But since 2013 is already brimming with possibilities for awards, it seems unlikely that there will be a flood of last-minute entries, which sometimes happens when studios and strategists see gaps in the kudos lists.
“Foxcatcher” concerns true story of Olympic wrestling champion brothers Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) and Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo) and their relationship with the eccentric John du Pont (Steve Carell), heir to the du Pont Chemical fortune that led to murder.”
TWC hasn’t yet assigned a release date for the James Gray-directed “The Immigrant,” which bowed at Cannes in May and had penciled in a fall release.
