Foreign-Language Oscar Entries Start to Trickle in

19 countries enter in Acad foreign-lingo bingo

Twenty-five countries have tossed their hat in the ring for the foreign-language Oscar race thus far.

Austria is back after taking home a statue at the 2012 Oscars for “Amour,” though the three countries to score a victory in the years prior (Iran, Denmark and Argentina) have yet to make submissions.

The deadline for entries is Oct. 1, and the Academy can expect to see submissions continue to trickle in until then. Frequent contender France is still absent from the pack, though don’t expect to see the buzzy Cannes Palme d’Or winner “Blue Is the Warmest Color” on the ballot — its October release date in Gaul renders it ineligible for competition.

And while they aren’t officially in the race just yet, a Pakistan committee has formed to make a submission for the first time in 50 years. Montenegro’s “Bad Destiny,” which earned a special jury prize at Sundance, marks the country’s first-ever submission to the foreign-lingo category.

The Academy will announce a full list of eligible submissions for the 86th Academy Awards in October. Nine finalists will be shortlisted in January, and the final five noms will be announced on Jan. 16. Last year a record 71 countries submitted entries.

Here’s a list of the announced submissions thus far:
