Documentary Short: Trio of vets meet rookie duo

Eye on the Oscars 2013: Best Picture Preview

Ranging in subject from homelessness to retirees in Florida to high-risk heart surgery in Africa, this year’s group of documentary short finalists is no stranger to Oscar.

Of the five projects in the running, three were directed by previously nominated helmers.

“Inocente,” about a homeless teen in San Diego, marks the second nod for Sean Fine and Andrea Nix in five years. Their feature doc, 2007’s “War Dance,” lost to Alex Gibney’s “Taxi to the Dark Side.”

That same year, cancer-oriented “Mondays at Racine” director Cynthia Wade won a little gold man for her short doc, “Freeheld.” And in 2010, Jon Alpert and Matthew O’Neill (who directed “Redemption,” about New York City canners), received a nod for 2009’s nonfiction short, “China’s Unnatural Disaster: The Tears of Sichuan Province.”

While Sari Gilman, director of “Kings Point” (about aging in America), and Kief Davidson of “Open Heart,” a look at high-risk heart surgery in the Sudan, are first-time nominees, both have been involved with doc filmmaking for well over a decade.
