Zeitgeist Films has acquired all U.S. rights to Calin Peter Netzer’s “Child’s Pose,” winner of the Golden Bear at Berlin and the Romanian entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards.

“Child’s Pose” will open at Film Forum on Feb. 19 with a national rollout to follow. The film had its North American debut last month at the Toronto Film Festival.

The film was produced by Parada Film and Hai-Hui Entertainment, with backing from HBO Romania. Netzer and Razvan Radulescu (“The Death of Mr. Lazarescu”) wrote the script.

Luminita Gheorghiu, in her first starring role, plays a matriarch who leads a life of privilege, surrounded by friends and wealth in Bucharest. When her son is involved in a car accident and could now face a hefty jail sentence, her maternal instincts kick into overdrive.

The deal was negotiated by Zeitgeist’s Nancy Gerstman and Beta Cinema’s Thorsten Ritter.

Beta has sold “Child’s Pose” to more than 20 territories.
