Toronto: “Wrath of Vajra” Rouses Buyers

Chinese 3D actioner is showcase for martial arts champ Shi Yanneng

TORONTO — Hong Kong studio Media Asia has assembled a slate of sales on “Wrath Of Vajra” a stereoscopic 3D martial arts actioner.

The film, which is pitched as a return to old-fashioned martial arts action, has enjoyed private buyers-only screenings in the margins of the Toronto festival.

Distributor Zoom Entertainment Network picked up rights for India, Westec Media bought it for Cambodia, Golden Yellow Tree acquired it for Myanmar and Sky Films acquired it for Taiwan.

The film is set for a North American release through Well Go USA, which acquired the title in Cannes, and in Germany and Benelux through an earlier pre-sale to Splendid.

The film’s first theatrical outing is in China on Sept. 26, allowing it to get a head start on the busy National Day / October releasing period and a three day advance on two other Chinese-language 3D pictures, both fantasies, Tsui Hark’s “Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon,” and “The Fox Lover,” directed by Niu Chaoyang.

“Vajra” is directed by Law Wing-cheong and stars martial arts champion Shi Yanneng, Steve Yoo and Ikeuchi Hiroyuki.
