Greater China To Dominate 50th Golden Horse Festival

Tributes paid to Asghar Farhadi, Alejandro Jodorowsky and Abdellatif Kechiche

BUSAN – Ryan Coogler’s “Fruitvale Station,” Roman Polanski’s “Venus in Fur” and Haifaa Al-Mansour’s “Wadjda” from Saudi Arabia are among the overseas titles that pepper the line-up of Taiwan’s Golden Horse Festival (Nov. 8-28, 2013).

The bulk of the selections are from Asia and the Greater China region, with the Chinese language component beefed up by its ‘Encounters with the Masters’ series dedicated to big name directors including Johnny To, Ang Lee, Jia Zhangke and Peter Chan.

The festival line-up includes a full selection of all the films selected for the Chinese-language Golden Horse Awards, and ‘Global Chinese Vision’ an offbeat section including “SDU: Sex Duties Unit” and Malaysian comedy “Kara King” by director Namewee.

The festival also pays elaborate tribute to Asghar Farhadi, Alejandro Jodorowsky, and Abdellatif Kechiche, including a screening of his Palme d’Or winning “Blue is the Warmest Color.”

From elsewhere in Asia are titles including: recent Busan opener “Vara: A Blessing”, Indian comedy drama “English Vinglish” (pictured,) and South Korean thriller “New World.”
