HONG KONG — China Lion Film Distribution has acquired rights to upcoming Dante Lam thriller “That Demon Within” from sales agent and co-producer Emperor Motion Pictures. It will release the picture in the U.S. and Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
The film stars Daniel Wu and Nick Cheung in the tale of a dutiful Hong Kong policeman who saves the life of a betrayed gang leader. The policeman joins forces with the gang leader, engineering a plan to shut the gang down, but soon finds himself on the run from the law and wanted for murder.
China Lion will release “Demon” in major metropolitan areas throughout both North America and Australia and New Zealand, continuing its practice of releasing Chinese language films day-and-date with China. The film is now in advanced post-production and will be released in China and throughout Asia in the first quarter of 2014 after the January Chinese New Year holidays. Specific release locations and dates will be announced.
“While the film deals with many of my familiar themes of thriller, cops and thieves this introduces a strong element of psychology,” Lam, a master stylist of the action thriller genre, told Variety. “There is suspense and redemption, but this is my darkest film yet.”
“As a child the cop character experienced a traumatic incident which cost a man’s life. That follows him and propels him to become a cop, but he can never really shake it off,” Lam said.
The film marks a reteaming of Lam and Cheung. Cheung previously starred in Lam’s international breakout hit “The Beast Stalker” and his most recent effort “Unbeatable,” for which he has earned a Golden Horse acting nomination.
China Lion previously handled “The Viral Factor” in North America.
The company will next release Chinese hit director Feng Xiaogang’s film “Personal Tailor” on Dec. 19 in Australia and New Zealand and in the U.S. and Canada on Dec. 20.
