Australia to Submit ‘The Rocket’ for Foreign-Language Oscar

TORONTO — Australia has selected “The Rocket” as its contender for the foreign-language Academy Award race.

The film is an Australia-Laos co-production in the Lao language, directed by Australia’s Kim Mordaunt and produced by Sylvia Wilcznski.

It tells the story of a boy who takes the initiative to lead his family and a band of assorted misfits across the war-torn country. There he intends to build a giant rocket and prove that he is not cursed.

“Rocket” had its premiere in February at the Berlin festival in its Generation Kplus section where it won its first awards, before scoring a trio of prizes at the Tribeca festival.

The film is currently on release in Australia through Curious Films. It is handled in other territories by Denmark’s LevelK and was licensed for North America by Kino Lorber.

It enjoyed finance by Screen Australia in association with Screen NSW, Ton Enterprises, Curious Film, Ecoventure, Colin and Karen McCumstie and Milsearch.

Australia last put forward the German-language feature “Lore.”
