Stan Lee Creates New Superheroes for Plotagon (EXCLUSIVE)

Stan Lee has found a new home for his superheroes: Plotagon.

The comicbook icon has inked a deal with the Swedish startup that will enable fans to produce short animated movies using four new characters Lee will create for the company through his Pow! Entertainment banner.

“I have had great fun creating all my characters, and have really enjoyed seeing my fans creating their own stories,” Lee said. “Now, through this collaboration with Plotagon, they can create their own superhero movies.”

Launched in August, Plotagon enables users to create short animated movies from a screenplay that’s written on the platform and using a base set of five characters and six settings. Finished films can be exported to Plotagon’s movie site or shared across various platforms, including YouTube. So far the quality of the animation in the shorts resemble those found in sequences in videogames like “The Sims,” but it’s expected to become more fluid and improve as Plotagon further develops its technology.

Plotagon has essentially put a twist on the growing online trend of fanfiction featuring characters from TV shows, books or movies. For example, Amazon’s Kindle Worlds publishes stories based on characters or properties it licenses. Plotagon also is looking to broker more deals with rights holders or develop new characters the way it’s done with Lee. It already offers expansion packs for “Alice in Wonderland” and “Pride and Prejudice.”

“Plotagon has been created around the idea of letting people create their own movies,” said Christopher Kingdon, CEO and founder, Plotagon. “Stan Lee and Pow! Entertainment have always been very close to their fans. To now be able to announce this collaboration is a perfect match. We are of course also humbled and thrilled to be working with our idol, the legendary creator of all the comicbook characters we love.”

Lee’s superheroes expansion pack, which will also include new settings, will be available for purchase through Plotagon’s content store for $9.99 in early November, during Lee’s Comikaze fanfest in Los Angeles.

Deal with Plotagon is being announced at New York Comic Con, currently underway at the Javits Center, where Plotagon is promoting its site.

Gudrun Giddings brokered the pact with Lee’s Pow! on behalf of Plotagon.

The deal is the latest for Lee after pairing up with Chinese state-run National Film Capital and Magic Storm Entertainment to produce the new superhero pic “Annihilator,” that will star singer-actor Wang Leehom; and with “Angry Birds” creator Rovio Entertainment to distribute “Chakra the Invincible” on its ToonsTV digital kids channel.
