The publisher said Thursday in a blog post that “I am also excited to reveal that we are well into development on a next-generation ‘Tomb Raider’ sequel — something you may have heard about recently!”
Square Enix CEO Phil Rogers posted the statement on Square Enix’s website, referring to news that came out of Comic-Con, in San Diego, that the company was continuing a “Tomb Raider” comicbook with Gail Simone set to tell a new story that bridges the most recent “Tomb Raider” game with its sequel, which will be designed for new consoles coming from Sony and Microsoft.
The new take on “Tomb Raider,” which introduces a younger Lara Croft as she goes on her first adventure, didn’t perform as well as Square Enix had hoped, selling over 4 million units since March.
But the franchise has been a workhorse for the company over the years, and Square Enix believes it has much life still left in it, especially as it sends Croft on new adventures on other platforms.
It recently hired “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”-scribe Marti Noxon to pen the script.
Although the latest “Tomb Raider” didn’t live up to expectations for Square Enix, the game still sold more units in its first week than any other “Tomb Raider” title, Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrell Gallagher said at GDC earlier this year — and was the most successful launch of the year at the time. It went on to sell 3.4 million units in its first month.
“We’re happy with the outcome,” Gallagher said. “It’s certainly in a place where we feel like we’re on the road to achieving everything we wanted to.”
The first “Tomb Raider” game sold over 6 million units, the same number Square Enix had hoped to reach with its reboot.
