‘Snowpiercer’ Animated Short Establishes World of Sci-Fi Thriller

Toon promotes Bong Joon-ho's upcoming film, out Aug. 1 in South Korea

Weeks before the post-apocalyptic sci-fi thrillerSnowpiercer” bows in South Korea early next month, an animated prequel has been released online that sets the stage of what happens in the film, directed by Bong Joon-ho (“The Host”).

Film takes place during a new Ice Age and revolves around a class system that divides the last of humanity’s survivors on board a train. It stars Chris Evans, Song Kangho, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Ewen Brewmner, Alison Pill, John Hurt and Ed Harris.

The violent short establishes how an attempt to end global warming caused the new ice age, why the train exists and how the lower classes on board plan an uprising.

Snowpiercer” will be released in South Korea on Aug. 1. There is not release date yet set for the U.S.
