CES: 3D unites Lionsgate, Samsung

Studio eyes format's homevid resurgence

Lionsgate and Samsung are joining forces to capitalize on the momentum of 3D content in the home entertainment market.

The studio giant has tapped a library slate of action films for 3D conversion that will find a home on Samsung’s Smart TV sets, including “Gamer,” “Crank,” “Bangkok Dangerous” and “The Descent.”

Lionsgate is looking to ride the wave of 3D titles that tripled in volume in 2012 versus the previous year, as more U.S. households are equipped to watch the format.

“The home entertainment market is ripe for a premium technology like 3D, and consumers have consistently demonstrated their willingness to pay for added value,” said Jim Packer, president of worldwide television and digital distribution.

“Lionsgate’s vast, high-quality content library, coupled with Samsung’s unique and proprietary 3D technology, will provide the best 3D viewing experiences to Samsung Smart TV consumers.” said Kyungshik Lee, senior VP of visual display business, at Samsung.
